There are 2 types of alpacas. We started with huacayas back in 2000 but were introduced to suri alpacas soon after. We now have about half and half. Suri alpacas have the most luxurious fleece which seems to shimmer in the light (called lustre in alpaca circles). This is Emerald who is likely to go to the National Show in 2024. We are well into birthing season on the farm now with just 2 baby alpacas (cria) to go. We have 20 babies already safely on the ground who you can meet if you book an alpaca walk.
I would like to introduce you to Elle and her mum Betty Boop. Walking alpacas is always huge fun - for us and them. Our 110 acre farm is entirely managed for wildlife and the alpacas act as our conservation grazers. At this time of year the fallow deer does come into our hay fields and give birth in the long grass. The deer fawns sit completely still unless disturbed or mum comes back to feed them. So, yesterday, as our guests walked our alpacas round one of our wildflower meadows, a deer fawn decided to pop up and then shoot off. Thankfully our alpacas are on the lookout and spotted the fawn (before I did). Farming for the benefit of wildlife has its benefits. WE have 2 barn owl boxes and this year 4 barn owl chicks are nearly ready to fledge.
